It’s September 9th, 2015 and he’s thanking the higher powers that he has survived the rubber boat crossing from Turkey to Greece. Other refugees hug while cheering and crying. A woman collapses from exhaustion while her child screams. Boat number 26 of the day has reached the shore at the small village of Skala Sikamineas on the Greek island Lesvos. The refugee crisis in Europe has been called the worst since the Second World War. 2015 was the year, where a large majority of Europeans for the first time realized just how serious the crisis has become. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), hundreds of thousands of people have fled towards Northern Europe - almost half crossing the Aegean Sea and into Greece. Faiz is 75 years old and has come all the way from Deir ez-Zur in Syria with his two daughters Mariam and Hamda and his grandson Murhaf. They have been on the road for almost a month and have now crossed the border to Hungary. Sweden was the family’s intended destination, but since the wheelchair is starting to come apart they have to register with the Hungarian authorities. It’s September 1st, 2015 and the Hungarian police have temporarily stopped all train traffic. They have also cleared the station building in an attempt to regain control of the large number of refugees trying to get on one of the trains going to countries like Austria and Germany. Outside the station, thousands of people are now waiting. Even though many had already bought tickets they were still denied access to the trains. Feeling cheated and having nowhere to go, they now refuse to leave the sidewalks around the station. In 2015 over 1 million migrants and refugees entered Europe according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). This large number of people seemed to take the European nations by surprise and resulted in a lot of debate between the countries as to how many refugees the individual countries should take in. During the summer Hungary tried to stop the flow of refugees by constructing a 175 km fence along their border with Serbia witch only resulted in redirecting the flow of people through Croatia instead. The year passed, and the politicians didn’t manage to come up with a viable solution to the refugee crisis in Europe.
